Winter loneliness

Winter loneliness, originally uploaded by Federico Erra.

I don’t know who this guy is.. he doesn’t seem to have a professional web-site, but he’s got a lot of great stuff on his flickr.

iceland rocks!

If you’re planning on taking a trip overseas anytime soon I highly recommend Iceland Air.  Their prices are the same if not cheaper than just about anywhere else but all of their flights go through Reykjavik and you can take up to 7 days free stopover!   And stay for free with someone form couchsurfing.  Just like me!  They are even updating their seats right now so you get a fancy touch screen in front of you to watch movies on – which are expensive – but you can also watch a screen of where you are! Yay!

And Iceland is definitely somewhere you want to go.

If you are going alone, you’ll probably just want to use Reykjavik Excursions to get around.  I took them to the Blue Lagoon and I also took the Gullfoss Geysir Direct tour instead of the Golden Circle tour which worked out just fine since we stopped at Kerio Volcanic Crater and drove through Thingvellir anyway.  If you’re going with friends – it’s very worth it to rent a car and just go exploring.

Also, if you’re interested in Icelandic Horses – Eld-Hestar is the way to go!  They’ll come pick you up at your hotel and drive you out to their farm for free – they showed me a really good time and proved to have the best deal in town. I took the 3hour long Mountains and Meadows tour and was the only one one that tour that day so I got to bond with my tour guide – she was just the right amount of chatty and very sensitive to my skills as a rider keeping me going fast enough to not get bored and slow enough that I didn’t loose control.  The 5th gait RULES.

I mean with this guy at the head of your operation how could you go wrong Fantastic!

Christian The Lion

Okay so I’ve missed this “viral video” until today.. but I’ve just added about 18 views to the 6million others..

Yeah.. I laughed.. I cried.. love it.  AND I highly recommend watching the interview linked below on the today show with the two men, there are extra cute pictures of them with the cub.  Christian chillin’ in the back of their bently for one.  Oh. Yes.  One day I do hope to be fortunate enough to be able to donate to the George Adamson Trust. It seems they do amazing things.

How have I not made a post about this yet?

I know when you hear the word couchsurfing you kind of deduce what it means – but this goes beyond your friend who got kicked out of his place and needs somewhere (your couch) to crash – connects travelers with a place to stay – or more importantly – someone to stay with.  I used this website through the first part of my trip and couldn’t sing its praises any louder.  I met the most amazing people and experienced the cities I visited in a way I never would have otherwise.  I’ve made friends I intend to keep forever.  Through a social networking site.  That’s something I have yet to be able to say about myspace or facebook.

I’ve gotten a lot of mixed reactions when talking about couchsurfing.  Most people instantly ask 1. Is it safe?  and 2. Whats in it for the hosts?

As far as safety goes – the web-site does what it can as far as verification and keeping tabs on whats going on, there’s a references system so if anyone was uncomfortable at someone’s place you’ll read about it on their profile, but most of all you can just use common sense.  There are profiles to read through and most people have a decent amount of pictures up – you can get a sense of creepsters just the way you can through any other networking site.  If you have a funny feeling about someone you just spring for a hostel –  don’t push your luck – don’t be stupid and couchsurfing is as safe as staying with a friend of a friend you haven’t met yet.

What’s in it for the hosts?  Its hard to say..  I haven’t hosted yet (though I’m trying!) and I would have been hesitant to start otherwise (the fact that I was a female living alone didn’t help).  I had a number of conversations with people I was staying with about this and we all seem to agree- couchsurfing renews you faith in humanity to a certain extent.  Its almost hippie feeling the way you give and recieve, but at least in my experience there are truely good vibes all around.  There’s nothing substantial you get from hosting.  Its just for the sake of meeting new people – good people – and sharing a few good times with them.  It just feels good.

That being said – try it for yourself.  Everyone wants a free place to stay when they travel.  You can’t resist it.  Pick 3 people who you like the sound of most and write them a personal request – overseas especially people are getting a number of requests a day – if it sounds like you’re just asking everyone on the site they’ll expect you’ll find someone else.  Once you stay with someone, you’ll want to starting hosting and then the people you host will start hosting and we’ll keep this good thing rolling!

they look normal enough eh?

happy travels!

Kerasotes Theaters on Western and Webster already offer $6 movies friday, saturday, and sunday before noon – an early bird special I happen to love. AND the theater on Western has $6 TUESDAY nights. Also awesome. BUT a long ignored superdeal has been right under my nose the whole time. THE FIVE BUCK CLUB!

If you’ve been to one of these theatres you’ve proably noticed in the commercials before the previews a bad animation of a yellow circley dude in a baseball cap at his computer typing away and sudden he screams “FIVE DOLLAR MOVIES? WHAAA?” I’ve seen the ad so many times I liked to mock his excitement.. I hated that awful yellow dude.. but I NEVER *listened* to him.. until a few days ago.

I mean – it seems too good! $5 movies? I thought it’d be one really shitty movie one day a week or something.. but I was wrong. Its a free card and it comes to you within two or three days- sign up your roommate too because each card is only good for one person. Each week they send you an email with the list of movies you can see with the deal and it’s seriously for half the movies in the theater!

I just saw Wanted. Worked like a charm! It wasn’t too good of a movie, but surely good enough for $5.

That’s people. DOIT.
